recently the weather turned cold here and stayed below freezing for almost two weeks. our mayor (the highest elected official in a city of 10,000 or so people) is upset that a local website organized relief efforts for those who were homeless. they found churches and individuals who were willing to raise money, food, housing/shelter, heating oil, electric bill money, and job assistance for anyone who was in desperate need. the mayor believed that all assistance should run through his office...only problem, his office clearly had no plans, no shelters, no money, and no people willing to help. this is clear because there are still (two weeks later) no shelters open sponsored by the city despite their complaints about the churches that are providing basic heated shelter for those who were living outside. there is now a growing effort to vote him out in the coming election because he apparently would rather people potentially die of exposure to the elements than allow average citizens to help those who are in need.
this will likely become a more interesting story locally as more details are revealed in the coming days.

I used to live in CT, now I'm essentially homeless.:(
update: mayor called on the sheriff to "investigate" the facebook page that organized the relief efforts. the local news did a story on those guys pointing out that the mayor and local emergency management folks didn't do squat and suddenly the mayor showed up at one of the makeshift homeless shelters (church fellowship hall) and supposedly donated money from his own pocket....busted.
Btw, I'm subbing to your PRs now that I see politics. Shameless self-promotion: follow me on Twitter @PoliticsSoForth
Where do you live? (Dont need specifics, just generally)
Greetings from a southern CT town you likely haven't heard of!
Pretty sad story. It's obvious that the mayor wants to take credit for other peoples efforts. He seems like a selfish, self centered individual that cares about nothing but his political aspirations. He deserves to be kicked out but waiting for the next election imo is too long to wait to get him out. Somebody needs to start an "impeach the mayor and make him live out in the cold" campaign. Sad, V
